According to this DailyMail.com article, one way to prevent your soda from exploding is by tapping the top of the can or bottle top. 

Why does that work? When you open a carbonated beverage, gas bubbles are rapidly trying to escape an airtight container. But when you tap your can or bottle top it helps disperse the bubbles and less liquid will be sprayed out.
