The First World War officially ended when the Treaty of Versailles was signed on June 28, 1919. However, fighting stopped seven months earlier when temporary cessation of hostilities, between the Allied nations and Germany, went into effect on the eleventh hour of the eleventh day of the eleventh month. For that reason, November 11, 1918, is generally regarded as the end of “the war to end all wars.”

So today, people all across the country are taking time to thank members of our Armed Forces for the sacrifices they have made to allow us to continue to live in the land of the free. Today, on Veterans Day, we salute the millions of Americans who have served, and are serving, our country.
