Last November, 74 percent of voters in Massachusetts voted against an expansion of their state’s current bottle bill tax – showing that they understand that the bottle bill is a costly, inefficient and outdated system.  But that hasn’t stopped some members of the state legislature from introducing legislation that would do exactly what Massachusetts voters just overwhelmingly rejected.  Year after year, similar proposals have gotten no traction as voters recognize that there are other recycling programs that make more sense.  Isn’t it time to move forward and expand convenient, comprehensive recycling programs that address all recyclables – not just beverage containers - like curbside recycling?

Bottle bills are antiquated policies that have no significant impact on the environment – and make it much more difficult for people to recycle.  Instead of having to clean out your bottles, store them at home and lug them to the store or redemption site, it’s simply easier just to put all of your recyclables at the curb.
