There are a lot of urban legends floating around on the internet about low-calorie sweeteners, such as those used in many of the refreshing beverages made by our member companies.  Every once in a while, they will pop up on list-servs, or be repeated in media stories.  Pretty scary stuff, huh?  Not really if you care about the truth, rather than what you’ll see most frequently – fiction.  All this misinformation does is attempt to stir up unnecessary and unwarranted concern – especially considering low-calorie sweeteners are some of the most studied ingredients in the food supply.

The facts are pretty simple.  First and foremost, low-calorie sweeteners are safe.  That’s not just our opinion, it’s also the finding of the U.S. Food and Drug Administration and the European Food Safety Authority.  And when used in beverages, they can be part of an effective weight loss and weight management plan.  Again, you don’t have to believe us.  The Academy of Nutrition and Dietetics and the American Diabetes Association agree.

So, what’s the bottom line here?  Don’t always believe what may show up in your email inbox.  Seek out the facts.  We’ve got a simple way to help you do just that – check out www.letsclearitup.org.  You’ll find facts about lots of ingredients and issues related to our industry – and all of them are easy to share with your friends and family.
