Over the weekend, President Obama signed a proclamation urging a renewed focus for continued progress toward solving childhood obesity. For the past two years, First Lady Michelle Obama’s “Let’s Move!” initiative has been on the forefront of this progress, partnering with public and private sectors to create environments that support healthy living, make nutritious food more available and get kids active. The launch of the next phase of the initiative, called “Let’s Move!” Active Schools, will help reintroduce physical education into schools.

We changed the beverage landscape in schools by voluntarily removing full-calorie soft drinks from school vending machines and replacing them with lower-calorie, smaller portion options. And this year, as kids across the country head back to school, there are a dramatic 90 percent fewer beverage calories shipped to schools.
