A new poll out from the Illinois Manufacturers' Association found that 87 percent of Cook County residents disapprove of the new beverage tax. The penny-per-ounce tax was implemented last week, impacting more than a thousand beverages, including juice, sports drinks, flavored waters, soda and iced tea. Even beverages with no calories and no sugar will be taxed.
We've written about the consequences of these taxes before - they place a heavy burden on businesses and eat up hard-working families' grocery budgets. Even children understand that these taxes are vastly unpopular.
Residents in Cook County deserve better.
