Did you know that 36 years ago today the United States men’s hockey team – considered the underdog – made history during the 1980 Olympic Winter Games by defeating the Soviet Union, the four-time defending Olympic champions?

The U.S. hockey team, made of unknown college players with an average age of 22 had gone against the best in world, the Soviet Union just three days before the Winter Olympics and were defeated 10 to 3. But when it really counted, Team USA didn’t give in and used their youth to their advantage and advanced to the final four to be a medal winning contender.

In a tense game with the Soviets in Lake Placid, N.Y., Team USA was able to perform a “Miracle on Ice” and defeated the top seeded team in the world.  Team USA went on to beat Finland in the finals two days later to bring home the gold medal. This win by Team USA illustrates the American can-do spirit and the excitement of the Olympic Games where anything can happen.
