Each January, the United States Conference of Mayors (USCM) convenes in Washington D.C. for their annual Winter Meeting. Since 2012, the USCM and the American Beverage Foundation for a Healthy America have joined together in a public-private partnership to support new or existing programs created by mayors to help combat childhood obesity. On Thursday, ABA's president & CEO Katherine Lugar joined the mayors to announce the 2019 Childhood Obesity Prevention Awards.
Including the 2019 winners, the program has awarded more than $3.1 million in grants to 40 cities representing every region of this great nation. Through these grants, mayors have been able to develop and advance innovative programs that encourage healthy, balanced lifestyles.
At the Childhood Obesity Prevention Awards luncheon, the following winners were announced:
1st Place, Large City: Mayor Eric Garcetti of Los Angeles, Calif.
1st Place, Medium City: Mayor Levar Stoney of Richmond, Va.
1st Place, Small City: Mayor Lydia Mihalik of Findlay, Ohio.
2nd Place, Large City: Mayor Paul Soglin of Madison, Wis.
2nd Place, Medium City: Mayor Karen Weaver of Flint, Mich.
2nd Place, Small City: Mayor Jamie Mayo of Monroe, La.
