The Illinois House Committee on Revenue & Finance voted yesterday, by a margin of seven to two, against a proposal to tax soft drinks and other sugar-sweetened beverages. At the hearing, lawmakers expressed the need to pursue more effective approaches to improving public health and acknowledged the negative impact a soda tax would have on hard-working families.

The Chicago Tribune outlined that soda taxes won’t make people healthier, but will put good-paying jobs at risk.  Check out this brief quote from the article:

"This is a middle-class regressive tax," said Rep. John Bradley, the Marion Democrat who chairs the panel. "This really hurts working people."
