From all of us at Sip & Savor, we wish you and your family a wonderful Thanksgiving.
Fun fact: It's become a tradition for families to gather together around a dinner table covered with food such as turkey, stuffing and mashed potatoes. But, the first Thanksgiving meal likely had little in common with what we eat today.
It's widely acknowledged that the first Thanksgiving was held in 1621 when about 90 Wampanoag Indians joined the pilgrims in Plymouth, Mass., for the traditional English harvest festival. The governor of Plymouth Colony, William Bradford, wrote that the colonists had gone hunting ahead of the festival and took a "great store" of waterfowl, wild turkeys and deer. The Indians brought five deer as well. But there is no record of what was actually served at the meal.
Many historians speculate the meal would've consisted of the things the colonists were known to have grown, hunted or gathered, such as game birds, venison, ham, lobster, clams, berries and squash. Potatoes were unknown to the colonists, having only been recently discovered by European explorers in South America. There was no dairy cattle, so no milk.
