This Sunday we honor and celebrate some of the most important women in our lives – mothers.
Mother’s Day in America was created by a West Virginian named Anna Jarvis following her own mother’s death as a way to honor mothers’ sacrifices for their children. It was first celebrated in 1908 and in 1914 President Woodrow Wilson proclaimed the second Sunday in May an official national holiday honoring mothers.
Other countries also celebrate Mother’s Day with their own traditions. Thailand observes Mother’s Day in August on the birthday of the current Queen Sirikit. Each fall in Ethiopia families honor motherhood with a multi-day celebration called Antrosht, which includes the singing of songs and a large feast.
However you plan to celebrate Mother’s Day, we at Sip & Savor hope that it is a joyous day spent with your loved ones. Join us in raising a beverage to all the moms out there!
