George Bernard Shaw once said, “Science is always wrong. It never solves a problem without creating ten more.”  No one laughs harder at that joke than those of us here at Sip & Savor.  For example, we shared with you yesterday positive scientific news issued by the European Food Safety Authority (EFSA), which confirmed – once again – that the low-calorie sweetener aspartame is safe for consumption.

In no time, the Center for Science in the Public Interest (CSPI) released a statement “sharply [criticizing]” EFSA’s conclusions, calling their science “cavalier” and using the opportunity to – once again – push their own agenda and attempt to misinform the public.

You’ve heard it before, but we'll say it again: aspartame is safe.  Not just according to EFSA, but also the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA), the British Food Standards Agency, the European Union Scientific Committee on Food and the Joint Food and Agriculture Organization/World Health Organization Expert Committee on Food Additives.

Critics at CSPI, who promote their organization as one committed to science, whose very name includes the word “science,” have an obligation to accept those facts, even when it contradicts their personal feelings on an issue.  Let’s remember: science is built on facts, not emotion.

We have an easy-to-use resource available that will help you differentiate between facts and emotion as they relate to our industry, products and ingredients.  Visit letsclearitup.org for more information.
