There has been quite a bit of buzz in the news lately about energy drinks. So we wanted to take a moment to put the category in perspective by taking on a claim that we hear quite a bit: "energy drinks have such high levels of caffeine."
Despite what you may hear or read, the caffeine content in most mainstream energy drinks is about half the caffeine of a similar size cup of coffee house coffee. Importantly, caffeine is considered safe by regulatory agencies around the world. In fact, caffeine is one of the most comprehensively studied ingredients in the food supply.
However, ABA does recognize that caffeine can be of concern to some. And that's why many of our members take extra steps to provide additional information to consumers by voluntarily listing the amount of caffeine right on the label; many also provide voluntary advisory statements; and, of course, information is available through 1-800 numbers and company websites. So if you want to know how much caffeine is in your favorite energy drink - or other favorite beverage for that matter - the information is available in a number of ways. Just remember, energy drinks as with everything, are best when consumed in moderation.
