We recently blogged about the importance of moderation and the story of an Iowa school teacher named John Cisna, who with the help of his students, over the course of 90 days, lost 37 pounds by eating a balanced diet from McDonald’s and walking 45 minutes per day.
So when we came across this letter to the editor in The Washington Times written by Natalie Webb, a registered dietitian nutritionist and president of the Nutrition Network, speaking to how great John Cisna’s concept was, we had to share. Here is an excerpt:
“The lesson learned from this experiment is that it’s not fast food that’s making us fat, it is how much and what we consume. It’s also the fact that most of us don’t get enough exercise to balance out what we’re eating.”
Here at Sip & Savor we talk about the issue of moderation a lot. But the story of John Cisna is a great example of the importance of balancing calories consumed through all food and drinks with calories burned through physical activity.
Webb closes with: “Moderation, not deprivation, is the key to healthful eating. Careful food selection and portion control are important components of a healthful eating plan.”
We think that’s smart. Check out the full letter by clicking here.
