In 1994, a former Washington, D.C. teacher formulated an afterschool program for students to participate in activities focused around the sport of soccer. It wasn't long before the program took off in popularity, as students learned to express themselves and take that relationship building learned on the field and translate it into leadership skills that helped them off the field and into their everyday lives. Now the America SCORES is a national initiative with headquarters in 13 cities and one is in our backyard – Washington, D.C.
According to the organization’s website, "DC SCORES enrolls close to 800 students between the ages of eight and 15…engages approximately 30 students each day at 25 public and public charter schools – 18 elementary and seven middle schools – covering District Wards 1, 2, 4, 5, 7, and 8."
And DC SCORES has an agenda that lines up with our focus on balanced and healthy living, as they inspire students to be engaged, knowledgeable and "agents of change in their communities."
We're happy to support this impressive organization, and encourage you to check them out in the District of Columbia or even in your own city.
