When it comes to calories, America’s beverage industry has a longstanding commitment to arming consumers with the information they need to help them find balance. In 2010, in support of the First Lady’s “Let’s Move!” campaign, America’s beverage companies announced a voluntary industry commitment to place easy-to-understand calorie labels on the front of every bottle, can and pack they produce. With the Clear on Calories initiative, consumers know exactly how many calories are in a beverage before making a purchase. Putting this information right at their fingertips empowers consumers to make the choice that’s right for them.
Building on that leadership, two years later, our member companies launched the Calories Count™ Beverage Vending Program. In an effort to provide clear calorie information on vending machines and remind consumers that “calories count” in all the choices they make, companies labeled selection buttons and placed stickers on the front of beverage vending machines with messages such as “Check Then Choose” and “Try a Low-Calorie Beverage.”
Today, America's beverage companies are providing more beverage choices than ever before with less sugar or no sugar at all. In fact, nearly 60% of beverages sold contain zero sugar.
These are just a couple of examples of how our industry is leading the way on educating consumers about its products and empowering them to make the choice that’s best for them and their families. To learn more, visit BalanceUS.org.
