Today a Washington tradition dating back more than a century takes place: the annual White House Easter Egg Roll. In the mid-1800's, local children would flock to the Capitol grounds and roll eggs down Capitol Hill. But cantankerous lawmakers soon grew tired of the wear and tear on the Capitol lawn and passed legislation prohibiting the practice. At the entreaty of local children, President Rutherford B. Hayes, the country's 19th President and native son of Ohio, moved the Easter egg roll to the White House lawn.
It's been a Washington tradition ever since, except for a few "missed" celebrations during World War II. Tickets are awarded by lottery and are greatly coveted by youngsters -- the event is only open to those under 13 and the adults who accompany them -- and festivities include live entertainment and commemorative wooden eggs signed by the President and First Lady that given as souvenirs.
Here at Sip and Savor we celebrate long-standing traditions, and we are proud to represent an innovative industry that has been a part of families, fun, and celebrations for nearly as long as this unique White House tradition.
