America's beverage companies were among the founding members of Keep America Beautiful (KAB) in 1953. KAB is a non-profit that "inspires and educates people to take action every day to improve and beautify their community environment."
Yesterday, President and CEO of KAB, Helen Lowman, was featured on the radio talk show, "The Business of Giving." On the show, Lowman busted common recycling myths and spoke about the iconic partnership between KAB and America's leading beverage companies.
"Honestly, we hear often from many companies... we need more bottles and cans back. We need them back. We need them back. So, keep recycling them," said Lowman.
KAB's willingness to engage in public-private partnerships has resulted in numerous initiatives, especially in the early days when our country needed leadership around sustainability and waste removal. In 1966, our industry joined with KAB to establish the Litter Control Committee to encourage the public to dispose waste and recycle. This committee helped develop anti-litter campaigns including a catchy slogan which was displayed with pride on company trucks - "Make America Sparkle - Don't be a Litterbug!" In her interview, Lowman made sure audiences were aware that recycling is just as important today as it was in the 1960s.
"We hope that people continue to understand that lesson but, unfortunately, litter is still a problem today and we still work really hard to fight it."
Stay tuned as we continue to find innovative ways to partner with KAB to make our communities more sustainable and litter free. To read the entire interview with Helen Lowman on "The Business of Giving," click here.
